Roblox to debut AI chatbot, allow USD payments on Creator Marketplace

Roblox To Share Details On AI Initiatives Wednesday: What Investors Should Know Roblox NYSE:RBLX

Roblox, the popular gaming platform, has exciting plans in store for its users. By the end of this year, Roblox will introduce a voice calling feature and a groundbreaking generative AI world-building chatbot. These innovative additions aim to enhance the user experience and further empower creators within the virtual ecosystem. Roblox Corp.’s announcements all appear focused on spurring growth on the platform.

Visual Studio and other AI-enabled programming environments typically write code in response to a developer’s comment or when the user starts typing. The startup Replit, which makes a popular online programming tool, recently launched a chatbot-like interface that will not only write code but answer programming questions. Microsoft was the first to harness the latest generation of AI for coding, through a deal with OpenAI, which has adapted a general purpose language technology Yakov Livshits called GPT to power a code generator called Codex. Microsoft enhanced the Codex’s coding abilities by feeding it more data from GitHub, a popular repository for software development, and has made it available through its Visual Studio programming application. Technology dubbed generative AI has captured attention and investment over the past year by showing that algorithms can produce seemingly coherent text and aesthetically pleasing images when given a short text prompt.

The Value of Generative AI for Our Creators

The company unveiled new avatar creation tools including mesh and texture APIs that help developers increase the range of an avatar’s animations and reactions, and allows people to customize avatars inside the game. A preview function has been added that enables creators to see how their avatar works with different facial expressions, emotes, accessories, and clothing. Shifting the Creator Marketplace’s payment directly to US dollars and eliminating a platform-based cut is a boon for developers creating games and other “experiences” (the company’s preferred nom de guerre) on Roblox. As Sturman noted, this shift will let developers receive payments faster, and better enable them to make Roblox asset development a full-time job. Under the hood, Roblox and Minecraft are very different products and they took very different paths to grow. Both, however, are rooted in the history of video game mods – dating back to the community of hackers that just wanted to bring their own ideas to life in the games they loved.

Other tools, filters, and techniques can also minimize certain anticipated legal issues. The “Stack” is a dataset for training AI designed to avoid copyright infringement issues. It includes only code with permissive open-source licensing and offers developers an easy way to remove their data Yakov Livshits on request. There are many, many, many areas that we’re already live on the platform with ML and AI stacks and more to come. I want to highlight that we have 70 machine learning training stacks right now. We have trained, for example, our own translation model with one billion parameters.

Roblox is using Large Language Models for Code Assist

First, the generative AI space is still evolving rapidly – Large Language Models (LLMs) only recently became good enough to meaningfully improve text and 2D asset workflows, and 3D asset models are still a work in progress. As a result, the first wave of AIGC platforms will likely be built flexibly, as the infrastructure layer changes over time (see below). Second, initial tools will also likely be built as evolutions or optimizations of existing toolsets and UI.

Yakov Livshits
Founder of the DevEducation project
A prolific businessman and investor, and the founder of several large companies in Israel, the USA and the UAE, Yakov’s corporation comprises over 2,000 employees all over the world. He graduated from the University of Oxford in the UK and Technion in Israel, before moving on to study complex systems science at NECSI in the USA. Yakov has a Masters in Software Development.

  • To train a large language model such as OpenAI’s GPT-3, analysts and technologists say could cost more than $4 million.
  • There are still other issues with IP when it comes to such generative AI tools, like what happens when a user asks for images of Mickey Mouse or some such property the tools might not have the rights to.
  • Baszucki said that Roblox has a significant AI team managing 70 distinct training models, adding that the team has made significant advances in trust and safety technology.
  • One developer said they were able to generate concept art for a single image in an hour using generative AI versus three weeks without it.
  • For now, Versed is working with 10 creators as part of an early alpha program, with plans to introduce the first roster of games by around October time when it will launch its private beta at New York’s Comic Con.

Others may be more experienced with model design, but less experienced with code. In both cases, we see a future in which even a beginner (such as myself for example – I’m a terrible artist!) can get a running head start as they look to bring their imagination to life in a Roblox experience. You can use it to make a new texture, then turn it into a realistic engine-ready material.

Nexus Deletes Starfield Pronoun Removal Mod, Angering a Few Players

It’s an AI writing tool that can be used to create NPC “barks” – quick phrases in-game characters say when an event is triggered by a player. And Roblox launched its generative AI coding tools for its many million-strong creator community, who can use its material generator to simulate lighting and Yakov Livshits AI code assist, to increase the speed of coding. For example, it can produce realistic textures for a “bright red rock canyon” or “stained glass.” It can also create several lines of functional code that will make certain objects change color and self-destruct after a player interacts with them.

This work involves unique technical challenges as we tackle the ability to generate 3D models with event handlers, an animation rig, and physical properties. This work is unprecedented because making interactive content requires a deeper understanding of the generated object. With the breadth of immersive content opportunities on Roblox, we also have the unique opportunity to create a generative model for all types of content at once – image, code, 3D models, audio, avatar creation, and more. Even more powerful, the convergence of media supported by generative AI will allow creators to develop integrated 3D objects that come with behavior built in.

“We’re not there yet, but that’s something we’re actively working on. Long term, it’s not just about pulling from the marketplace; it’s about generating new items in 3D for you.” The third big announcement of the show is Roblox Assistant, a conversational AI tool intended to assist creators on the platform. Technology dubbed generative AI has captured attention and investment over the past year by showing that algorithms can produce seemingly coherent text and aesthetically pleasing images when given a short text prompt. The technology relies on AI models trained with lots of data in the form of text or images scraped from the web and is also at work in the viral chatbot ChatGPT. Some AI researchers are experimenting with similar techniques for generating video and 3D content, but this is mostly at an early stage. “It can act as an incredible on-ramp to creators on the platform, but it also can work in a way that can really accelerate existing creators,” Sturman says of the tool. “It’s not a separate thing from Studio. It’s all part of the creator tools we’ve been shipping for years; it’s just accelerating them with the power of generative AI.”
